Moments

They say it’s important to treasure the moment, to savor the simple pleasures in life, and to practice gratitude. I’ve tried my hand at it for a while now, starting off by taking photos of situations and people that filled me with joy and, as a ritual, scrolling through them from time to time. And though it always made me smile it’s only today that I discovered my ultimate gratitude trick: short videos.

I’m not a professional editor. But, fortunately, I don’t have to be. My phone does it for me. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it earlier. It makes such a difference! The soft flow of my most precious pictures, a beautiful melody to underline the vibe, a title in a cute font. And that’s it. It never fails to get to me. After all, those are my moments, my memories, my friends, my family. There is nothing else like it.

I’ve created a number of them today, one for each category. To consult and reconnect with when I happen to have a shortage of happy memories on a given day. Suddenly it’s so easy to get back in touch with how I felt when I experienced those moments. I can resurrect imprints of quiet happiness I once felt. A freshly brewed coffee, homemade bread, delicious treats, soft ocean waves, trees swinging in the wind, birds chirping, plants growing.

It appears they are right: It does not take much to be happy. And most of it is available every day. Right at our fingertips. Right under our noses. Within reach. If only we notice it when it happens.

And this is how I realize, even on bad days, that life isn’t so bad after all.

In fact, it’s pretty magical.
